With the ‘WannaCry’ scare still fresh in our minds, once again, the cyber security world strives to keep up with the latest massive global ransomware attack called ‘Petya’. Petya, similar to WannaCry, spreads rapidly through networks that use Microsoft Windows. It takes over computers and demands ransom, paid in Bitcoin. The malware attempts one option and if it doesn’t work, it tries the next one, giving it a better mechanism for spreading itself than WannaCry.
Though this ransomware is not new, a high number of Petya ransomware attacks were reported as of June 27th, 2017.The good news is: if you have updated firewall security services, you should be protected; however, it is best you work with your dedicated IT partner to ensure this is the case.
If you are unsure about the level of protection against Petya (or any cyber threat), consider taking the following actions:
- Ensure your firewall has a current active security subscription in order to receive automatic real-time protection from known ransomware attacks such as Petya.
- Ensure your e-mail security subscriptions are active (the majority of ransomware attacks happen through phishing emails).
