The WannaCry Scare
By now you’ve probably heard about the most recent ransomware strain taking the world by storm – the Ransom.CryptXXX strain, better known as (and appropriately named) “WannaCry.” What you may not know is exactly how it affects your business and what you can do to prevent from becoming a victim!
WannaCry was released on May 12, 2017 and targets computers running the Windows operating system, encrypting data and demanding ransom payments in the form of something known as Bitcoin currency. The strain is impacting businesses across the world, particularly in Europe. WannaCry works by spreading across local networks and the Internet to those systems not updated with the most recent Windows patches and security updates. Those with outdated, unsupported operating systems such as Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 are at particular risk.
Though the initial scare from WannaCry is beginning to die down, you can be sure that this will not be the last of the many security threats to come down the pipeline. It is extremely important to have updated operating systems, as well as a solid firewall and anti-virus software to protect those systems! Even more important? Having a dedicated IT Provider to ensure that your business is always protected from such attacks!
